Midland PTO Minutes 8-25-08
On August 25, 2008, Terri Lambrecht called the meeting to order at 6:34 pm.
Introductions were given by the officers and the parents in attendance.
Rachel Bickel gave a copy of the minutes to the officers and parents in attendance. The minutes were reviewed and voted approved.
Sonia Morrison gave copies of the treasurer’s report to the officers and parents. The report was reviewed and approved.
Julie Albers gave the elementary principal’s report
-school year is off to a good start=cool weather
-received a $60,000 grant from the Illinois State Board of Education for an
addition to Starting Blocks
-the money will be for new furniture which doesn’t have to come out
of district funds
-preschool grant is for at risk children only
-must meet certain requirements
-20 kids allowed in the preschool
-September 15th is Artist in Residency
-Illinois artist
-K thru 4 will attend with 1 class per week
-Mrs. Downy and artist will be working together to tie books and pictures together
-need donations (tuna cans, cool whip containers, small paint stir sticks,
newspaper)
-1 volunteer per class time is needed—sign up sheet passed around
-new teachers and staff are working nicely
-new story called Have You Filled Your Bucket Today
-kids put slips in bucket for kind things done to them
Peg Frey gave the middle school Principal’s report
-Survivor Midland =success
-Middle school almost ready=will be inspected August 29th
-found asbestos=more time
-floors are going on now
-found copper piping in science room which were capped off
-furniture is being recycled but still looking for shelving for storage
-Open House Aug. 26th 6:30- 8:30 pm
-volunteers are always needed
New Business
-Chris Downy requested $600.00 to obtain books before for Illinois author Jim
Aylesworth comes to classrooms on November 6th.
-grants received to pay for him and mileage through Sun Foundation
and Midland Education Fund/Morton school may share cost
-6 paperback books and 4-5 hardback books
-$375.00/books, $125.00/math manipulation, $100.00/estimation

-a motion was made by Nicole Sivertson to approve the request with
Summer Traver seconding the motion
-everyone in favor/request granted
-Ginny Moore requested $362.00 for Native American activities for the
5th grade classes on Oct. 30th (? date)
-Ginny was unable to attend therefore questions from the committee
and parents were unable to be answered. A motion was made by
Summer Traver to pay $200.00 for books and seconded by Nicole
Sivertson. All in favor/approved.
Sonia Morrison discussed the budget.
-explained that many things were “standing” amounts and approved each year
-explained that if an item is not in the budget we do not have to pay for it
-Terri Lambrecht explained field trip money ($5.00 per student) which is done
every year
-questions were asked about Teacher Appreciation Funds and how much
is allocated towards it/would like to lower the budget for this therefore
being able to give more money towards the children
-Julie discussed that the district will work with the teachers for supplies
from the building budget.
-ideas for fundraiser were brought up
-Scrip
-non-fundraiser fundraiser=tax deductible, best time in Feb. and Oct.
-Market Day=on hold
-Garage Sale K-8=October 11, 2008, 8am-2pm (more info to come)
-kids items only
-RIF K-6
-district lost funding from the state 1 year ago
-suggest giving 2 books to each child instead of 3
-budget was tabled
-Budget Meeting set for 9-15-08 6:30pm elementary cafeteria-open

-reimbursement policy was tabled due to budget not approved
-teachers gifts tabled due to budget not approved
Julie Albers requested $2,200.00 for Artist in Residency.
-she has received some funding already
-can wait for approval
-Jennifer Lindstrom motioned to pay the full amount.

Carnival Date set for February 7, 2009 (tentative)-more info to come
