7
Overuse of Animation
8
PowerPointlessness
  • Tedious use of flashy graphics, transitions and sound effects while making a slide presentation that is pretty much lacking in meaning, thought and value.
9
Overload… Here’s everything I know.
10
Reading the Slide
  • The other big mistake many people make is putting a lot of text on the page and then reading it like the audience is STUPID
  • Research tells us that we actually will be less likely to remember it this way
  • So let’s stop cramming our slides with text and for sure stop reading them!

11
When you read slides
                      to your audience . . .
  • Everything has the same emphasis

  • The audience can’t tell what’s important
12
Background issues
  • Font darker than background = hard to read

13
Background issues

  • Font lighter than background may not look good when projected

14
Background issues

  • High contrast has most impact!!
15
What about design?
  • Some of you may misunderstand what design is and why it matters.

  • It is easy to get carried away with design – to make it too “pretty” or too “cool” will disguise a slide show that is lacking good information.

16
Solutions
  • Don’t use templates

  • Start with a blank slate
17
A photo background has impact!
18
"OR use a BLACK background"
  • OR use a BLACK background!
19
The best presentations . . .
  • Have ONE idea per slide

  • Don’t distract or take away from your information

  • Put as little as possible on a slide

20

21
Think of simple storytelling!
  • The idea is sequencing.

  • Clear titles and graphics.

  • YOU are the most important part in your story.

22
So what makes a good story???
  • Use a detailed script or outline

  • Make use of the notes page view
23
"Use animation and sound sparingly..."
  • Use animation and sound sparingly!!

24
Images

  • Avoid cartoons

  • Find good quality images
25
Images
  • Use images which convey emotion

26
Use drawings
  • Take a photograph of a drawing

  • Don’t scan; scanning is time consuming
27
Images
  • Add humor

  • Use fonts that add to the message
  • Large image size is best
